Fire path, El Pont de Suert
How to reach the faro of El Pont de Suert
The Torchlight Descent of El Pont de Suert takes place on the eve of Saint John’s Day, on 23 June.
The origins of this pagan festival date back to ancient times and are linked to the summer solstice. At a time when people had no material means to face plagues, droughts or other adversities, fire was used as a purifying element.
Before nightfall, the fallaires walk up to the faro carrying their falla, cowbell and truc. Once there, the groups have dinner before beginning the descent.
The falla and the tradition
The lighting of the faro marks the start of the Torchlight Descent. The fallaires walk down in a line, in an orderly manner, towards the village.
The route through the Old Quarter is done running, accompanied by the sound of the trucs, cowbells and the bells of the Old Church, creating a festive and emotional atmosphere for all the people of El Pont de Suert.
The descent ends with a circle, where the falles are thrown into the centre and a large bonfire is lit.
