Estanys Rois

This is a demanding high-mountain route that begins at the Toirigo car park, near Caldes de Boí. The trail initially enters the forest and gains elevation steadily, with some steep sections. During the ascent, the route passes near the Heisons waterfall and the Sallent ravine, through a wooded landscape shaped by the presence of water.

As the route gains altitude, the vegetation gradually becomes sparser until it reaches Pla de la Cabana, also known as Planell de Llubriqueto. This area of pasture, crossed by small streams, is home to the Llubriqueto spring and offers fine views of the surrounding mountains. From here, the route continues towards the Llubriqueto waterfall, also known as the Gémena waterfall, one of the highlights of the hike.

The route continues along the Estany Roi ravine, through alpine meadows, streams and rocky formations. The final section leads to the Estanys Rois, located in a secluded setting and surrounded by a distinctly Pyrenean landscape. From this area, there are wide-ranging views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The return follows the same route back to the Toirigo car park. The accumulated elevation gain, the length of the route and the rocky sections make this hike suitable for people accustomed to walking in high-mountain terrain.

Points of interest

Toirigo car park and the surroundings of Caldes de Boí: the starting point of the route, located near Caldes de Boí and surrounded by mountain forests. The ascent towards the higher areas of the valley begins here.

Heisons waterfall and Sallent ravine: during the first section of the ascent, the route passes through a wooded landscape shaped by water. The Heisons waterfall and the Sallent ravine add considerable scenic interest to this part of the route.

Pla de la Cabana or Planell de Llubriqueto and the Llubriqueto spring: an open area of pasture located between the forest and the high mountains. The Llubriqueto spring and the small streams crossing the planell create a peaceful landscape with fine views of the valley and the surrounding mountains.

Llubriqueto waterfall or Gémena waterfall: a waterfall set in a rocky landscape of great scenic beauty. It is one of the highlights of the route before the ascent continues towards the Estany Roi ravine.

Estany Roi ravine and Estanys Rois: the upper section of the route follows the Estany Roi ravine through alpine meadows, rocky areas and small streams. The Estanys Rois, located at an altitude of around 2,400 metres, form a group of lakes surrounded by a distinctly Pyrenean landscape.

High-mountain panoramic views: from the highest sections of the route, hikers can enjoy wide-ranging views of the valleys, ravines, lakes and peaks around Caldes de Boí.

* During the summer months, from 21 June to 30 September, an on-demand public transport service known as the Bus del Parc operates in the area. It can be combined with hiking routes through the mountains of Alta Ribagorça towards neighbouring regions. The service allows hikers to return to their starting point using four daily transport services operating between the Vall de Boí and the Espot valley, via the Val d’Aran.

Additional information

• Great care must be taken in the event of sudden changes in the weather. Fog, storms, wind and the presence of snow can make navigation and progress considerably more difficult.
• Hikers are advised to wear suitable mountain footwear and clothing and to carry water, sun protection and equipment appropriate for the weather conditions. Before setting out, check the weather forecast and the condition of the route.
