New Church of the Assumption

The church of the Assumption of the Pont de Suert was built as a result of the notable demographic growth that the municipality experienced with the arrival of the hydroelectric company ENHER. The temple was consecrated on September 7, 1955.

The architectural project was developed by Eduardo Torroja Miret, with the collaboration of José Rodríguez Mijares. The interior paintings and the carving of the Virgin of the main altar are the work of the painter Marisa Röesset, while the relief of the doorway and other sculptures were made by Jacinto Higueras Montes.

The building has a single nave finished with an apse designed from a logarithmic spiral, which could symbolize the resurrection. The nave is covered by a pointed vault divided into five sections, formed by sheets that follow the shape of a pointed arch. Between the triangular spaces of the vault there are glass slabs that allow natural light to enter, while at the base of each section there are niches that act as side chapels.

The architectural complex is completed with two annex spaces: the baptistery, covered with a triple dome open in the centre, and the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, in the shape of a pineapple or acorn and covered by a dome with small glass slabs in the shape of a star that let light through.

The temple also has a freestanding bell tower 16 meters high, formed by three arms arranged at 130 degrees, which rise progressively to a conical roof.

The construction was carried out mainly with two materials: bricks for the vaults and granite ashlars for the exterior cladding.

The church was declared a Cultural Asset of Local Interest in 2004.
