A haunted journey to the Pyrenees

Legend has it that the witches of Vilaller lived in the Carantos, rock crevices in the mountain, very close to where the boys used to lower the falles on the night of Sant Joan.

When it rained, witches would remove dirty clothes from inside the caves and spread them outside to be cleaned. Once clean and dry, the witches hurried to hide their treasure back inside the hole.

At midnight, when the whole town was sleeping, the witches of the Carantos went down to the Plaza de Vilaller and danced the Bolangera. They were never surprised by anyone, and as soon as they sensed that someone was approaching to spy on them, they touched the two of them towards their holes.

Only one man from the village, the carpenter Xep de Veleta, had caught them once dancing in the square.

The fact, however, is that a few days ago, a terrible gale scattered all the clothes they had hanging out.

Now, the witches propose to help them recover the different pieces of clothing, which have been distributed in different places in the three municipalities of the region.

To thank us for the help, if we complete the three itineraries, thus recovering all their clothes, they will give us a prize at the tourist offices of the region.

Storyline:

The Carantos Witches Discover Alta Ribagorça

Story

We arrived in Vilaller at night and, while strolling through its historic centre, we came across the Carantos Witches on their way to dance in Sant Climent Square. As soon as they saw us, they tried to run away and hide in their caves, but we managed to talk to them. They promised to show us around Vilaller and the rest of Alta Ribagorça. We agreed to meet them early the next morning to discover Vilaller and its surroundings.

TOUR OF VILALLER

We meet in Sant Climent Square, where the witches tell us that whenever it rains, they take their dirty clothes out of their caves and hang them outside so the rain can wash them clean. Once the clothes are dry, they hurry to hide their treasure back inside their secret caves. But a strong gust of wind has scattered their laundry all over the village, and they ask for our help to collect their belongings.

TOUR OF EL PONT DE SUERT

Among the clothes the Carantos Witches had hung out to dry in Vilaller was a small cloth bag containing magical herbs. As we retrieved it from the bridge where it had become caught, the bag suddenly opened and the herbs spilled into the river. Swept away by the current, the herbs transformed into different animals that live throughout the region.

What a mess! The witches ask us to help catch all the little creatures that have scattered across El Pont de Suert.

TOUR OF THE VALL DE BOÍ

The Carantos Witches can never enjoy a moment’s peace. Just as they are about to return to their rocky hideouts, they hear laughter. It’s the little Carantos Witches—mischievous and playful as ever. They have scattered all the witches’ potion-making tools across the Vall de Boí.

Now how will they prepare their magical potions? We’ll have to help them recover every last one.
