The Salencars of Alta Ribagorça

Salencar de Barruera

The Salencar de Barruera, also known as the Cardet reservoir, is a wetland located downstream of the village of Barruera, formed from the construction of the Cardet dam in the fifties. Over time, the accumulation of sediments transported by the Noguera de Tor river has favoured the formation of a large natural space where riverside vegetation and wetlands have developed.

This natural process has allowed the appearance of an important willet forest, mainly made up of willows, rushes and other species typical of wetlands. This type of habitat has great ecological value and is especially important for many species of birds, amphibians and small mammals.

The Salencar de Barruera is part of the Natura 2000 Network and is also a very accessible space for visitors. Several signposted itineraries, wooden walkways, viewpoints and observation points allow you to discover this natural environment and observe the fauna and flora that inhabit it.

Salencar de Llesp

The Salencar de Llesp is another outstanding wetland in the Alta Ribagorça, located around the course of the Noguera de Tor river, near the village of Llesp. This natural area is a representative example of the riverside forests and flood zones characteristic of the Pyrenean rivers.

The vegetation is dominated by willows, which give their name to the willow, as well as by other species typical of river environments. This type of ecosystem offers shelter and food to numerous species of fauna, especially birds, insects and amphibians, and plays a very important role in the conservation of biodiversity.

The Salencar de Llesp is a quiet space of great natural value, ideal for walking, observing nature and enjoying the riverside landscape that accompanies the course of the river.

Information

  • General information:

The willows are riparian ecosystems characteristic of the Pyrenean rivers, formed mainly by willows and other species typical of wetlands that grow in land that is often flooded. These spaces have a great ecological value, as they act as a refuge and feeding area for numerous species of fauna and flora, as well as contributing to the natural regulation of the river and the conservation of biodiversity.

In Alta Ribagorça, the Noguera de Tor river has favoured the formation of several salencars along its route. Among the most outstanding are the Salencar de Barruera and the Salencar de Llesp, two natural spaces that allow you to discover the richness of the riverside ecosystems and enjoy a quiet landscape full of life. These places are ideal for walking, observing nature and getting to know the natural diversity that characterizes the region.
